Translated to “International Hill” in English, Bukit Antarabangsa is an affluent neighbourhood located within Ulu Klang, Selangor. It is regarded to be one of Malaysia’s elite residential areas akin to Bangsar and Damansara, and is known to be occupied by celebrities and political figures alike.
Despite being an affluent neighbourhood, Bukit Antarabangsa has seen its fair share of tragedies in form of landslides. There has been three notable instances of landslides which occurred in Bukit Antarabangsa to-date, one in December 2008, another one in May 1999 and the Highland Tower incident in 1993 which left around 50 of its residents dead.
Since then there has been no major developments within Bukit Antarabangsa as it has been rumoured that the government has disallowed it. In addition, a quick search on the internet will show results in Bukit Antarabangsa topping the list of Malaysia’s most haunted places due to the Highland Tower incident.
Since the incidents of all the landslides, many of the existing condominiums close to the site of the landslides have suffered a stagnant or depreciating value of property as the land here is still said to still be gradually moving during heavy rains. Residents of these condominiums live in fear for their homes, with many of them having already moved out.
Sales of homes in Bukit Antarabangsa have also come to an almost complete halt as the banks have considered this area to be a high risk zone, and as such usually refuse to pass any loan for properties in this area.
Due to this, despite still being referred to as an affluent neighbourhood, prices of units within Bukit Antarabangsa are rather affordable with many of the well-to-dos having moved on to safer premises.
